The Sober Hobo - Who Am I?
Welcome to The Sober Hobo!
I want to take a few minutes to introduce myself and tell you how I got here. I go into detail as far as how I started living the Airbnb life in my book (Modern Day Hobo - Available on Amazon and “almost” anywhere you get your books), but there is no mention of my sobriety in the book. And that was on purpose.
What I do now, as far as traveling and living in Airbnb properties can be done by anyone, which is why I didn’t want to make that a book about sobriety. But since I have been doing this (since April, 2024), several people have made comments about the fact that I am doing this sober. Basically what a sober individual can accomplish, for one thing, but more importantly, that travel in general doesn’t have to involve alcohol.
In my eyes, I’m just a regular guy, who needed to get sober and now I get to travel. That being said, I feel compelled to give you a little background, so here we go.
My sobriety date is 4/18/2010 and as I am writing this, I am a little over 15 years sober. I did use a 12 Step program to get sober and I still live by those principles to this day.
Alcohol was my “drug of choice,” and I drank for many years. Not all of the years were problematic, but of course towards the end (the last 5 years specifically) I was a mess and I needed to get sober.
The process of getting sober is one thing, but what about living sober? I have no issues with anyone who can drink responsibly and I am not anti-alcohol. However, as a society, alcohol is a part of almost everything, from family events to work events, hanging out with friends, going to a concert and of course traveling.
I’m not going on “organized” vacations to resorts or places like that, but I have checked into many properties so far that have a bottle of wine waiting on the kitchen table or a 6 pack of beer from the local brewery was in the refrigerator. Even the write ups for many of the properties focus on the “night life,” and the local bars to visit.
None of those things bother me (at this point in my sobriety), but they are things that I have had to face and deal with. I also travel solo, for the most part, which can be challenging for a lot of people, but certainly for people that are in recovery.
My goal is to write about my sober experiences and hopefully show you that you can travel, alcohol free, and have an amazing time.
